U.S. Labor Department pairs town hall meetings, Traveling Resource Center

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor will visit Twin Falls, Idaho; Spokane, Wash.; and Salem, Ore., to provide information about the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).  Through town hall meetings, officials will explain how certain uranium miners, uranium millers and ore transporters may qualify for federal compensation and medical benefits under Parts B and E of the EEOICPA.  The department’s Traveling Resource Center personnel will be available to help individuals interested in filing compensation claims.

Uranium workers who received a $100,000 award under Section 5 of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, may be eligible to receive an additional lump sum compensation award in the amount of $50,000 and medical benefits under Part B of the EEOICPA for the same illness.  Uranium workers who developed an illness as a result of exposure to toxic substances while working at a RECA Section 5 facility at any time during the period from Jan. 1, 1942, through Dec.31, 1971, may be eligible for federal compensation and medical benefits under Part E of the EEOICPA.  An award under Section 5 of RECA is not required for consideration under Part E of the EEOICPA.  Survivors of uranium workers are also potentially eligible for benefits under both parts.

For additional information about the meetings or to schedule an appointment for claim-filing assistance, call 888-654-0014 toll-free.  Pre-registration is not required to participate in these activities.
