Women at 19 sites across the country will participate this September in an unprecendented month-long series of Working Women Summits focusing on options for solving problems such as downsizing, fair pay, child and elder care, workplace flexibility, workplace violence, lifelong learning, the glass ceiling and pension security.

"We want women to know there is help for them as they struggle to give their families both the attention and the financial security they need," said Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich in announcing the summits which will be sponsored by the department's Women's Bureau . "Women will find out that there are steps they can take right now to advance their careers, balance the demands of work and family and assure their retirement security."

The Women's Bureau will also launch the new "Fair Pay Clearinghouse" established to provide information and resources to help working women and men, employers and other organizations improve pay scales. Each summit will focus on a specific issue. Experts from the federal government, nonprofit organizations and the private sector will provide information on a broad range of topics from skills development to pension planning, as well as family friendly workplaces. The summits will have demonstrations on America's Job Bank, a free computerized job bank on the Internet that links employers to job seekers. With more than half a million jobs, America's Job Bank is the largest active pool of job opportunities anywhere.

"At the end of the day -- we want women to walk away with the tools necessary to make their lives better at work and at home," says head of the Women's Bureau Ida L. Castro.

The ideas and comments from the working women will be used by the Women's Bureau to ensure that the road to the year 2000 follows working women's needs.
