Vice President Gore today presented the "Hammer Award" to
the Department of Labor's Women's Bureau for dramatically improving the way
government works. The award for the Working Women Count! Honor Roll was made at
a luncheon ceremony during Vice President Gore's fifth Family Reunion
conference in Nashville.
The Vice President recognized Acting Director Ida Castro
and eight frontline workers for "putting customers first" by responding to the
concerns women raised in the Working Women Count! survey. The Women's Bureau
has embraced the use of cooperation, partnership and incentives to help make
America's workplaces family-friendly.
"The Women's Bureau has been a leader in promoting
corporate responsibility," said Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich. "The
Women's Bureau Honor Roll challenges employers to create workplaces that make
work better for women and their families."
"I am proud that the Honor Roll encouraged employers to
provide child care subsidies, job training opportunities, career advancements,
parental leave, and other benefits that show they value women workers," said
Castro.
President Clinton, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton,
Tipper Gore, Secretary Reich, members of the Cabinet, government leaders,
family members, and experts in the field of family issues joined Vice President
Gore at the Conference. This year's conference focuses on the difficult task of
balancing family and work.
