The U.S. Department of Labor has given $203,000 to the
YMCA of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area to train former welfare
recipients as child care workers. The new workers will train at the Labor
Department's Esther Peterson Child Development Center and other YMCA-managed
child care centers.
The training program will follow a registered
apprenticeship model and will meet the District's licensing requirements for
child care workers.
"The training that will be provided through this grant will
be a model for training child care workers and it will help welfare recipients
find meaningful work," Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman said.
The YMCA is the largest child care provider in the United
States and has been offering child care-related services for over 50 years. It
is currently under contract with the Board of Directors to administer all child
care provider services at the Esther Peterson Child Development Center.
