Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman announced grants totaling more than
$5.8 million to eleven states to help recently separated, Vietnam-era and
special disabled veterans find, qualify for and keep good jobs in the civilian
labor market.
"One of the goals of the Labor Department is to help veterans succeed in
the civilian labor pool," said Herman. "Veterans play a key role in helping
America maintain a skilled workforce into the 21st century. These dedicated men
and women with a history of prior service to their country can become important
assets to businesses competing in today's global marketplace."
The funds are authorized by the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA)
Title IV-C, administered by the Labor Department's Veterans' Employment and
Training Service (VETS). The funds must be used to help veterans from targeted
groups overcome employment barriers and ease their transition to unsubsidized
employment.
Each state has selected an organization to receive the funds and use
them to develop and oversee local training and employment programs for
veterans. The grants make possible a range of services for veterans including:
assessing their job skills; job counseling, labor market information, classroom
or on-the-job training, skills upgrading and retraining and job placement help.
Veterans receiving assistance from these programs may also be found eligible
for other help from related JTPA programs, such as for economically
disadvantaged or dislocated workers.
VETS selected the eleven states from among 29 that submitted grant
proposals. Grant funds must be spent between July 1, 1998 and June 30, 1999.
