Homeless veterans in 11 states and the District of Columbia
will receive training, job search and placement assistance through $2.5 million
in grants announced today by President Clinton and Secretary of Labor Alexis M.
Herman.
"We have a special obligation to the men and women who have
served our nation so selflessly," President Clinton said. "Our veterans deserve
the very best opportunities that America can provide."
The grants, to 22 state and local public agencies and
non-profit organizations, will provide job search and counseling assistance,
remedial education, classroom and on-the-job training, and support services
such as transportation and transitional housing so that veterans can
participate in and keep the jobs they get through the programs.
"The thousands of homeless veterans in America should have
the opportunity to gain the skills training they need to succeed," Herman said.
"These grants for job training and placement will help many of them escape
tragedy and begin realizing the American Dream."
The funds for the grants are authorized by Title VII of
the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act and are administered by the
Labor Department's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS). VETS
received more than 60 applications for funding. The grant recipients were
chosen by a competitive process. Each recipient received the total amount of
funds requested to run the programs.
"This nation cannot afford to waste the creative energies
of these talented men and women who have so much to offer," said Espiridion
(Al) Borrego, assistant secretary of labor for veterans employment and
training. "These grants will be leveraged by the grantees to insure a
continuation of services to thousands of veterans without homes."
VETS is the only government agency who's primary mission
is to assist veterans find unsubsidized jobs in the civilian labor market.
