Twelve states will receive more than $5.8 million to help Vietnam-era veterans, recently discharged veterans, and veterans with service-connected disabilities qualify for, find, and keep good jobs in the civilian economy, Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich announced today.

The funds are from the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) administered by the department's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS) to help veterans from three targeted groups overcome employment barriers and ease their transition into unsubsidized jobs. Training and placement programs are developed and operated by an entity designated by the governor of each state receiving a grant.

"Veterans represent a huge talent pool for any organization seeking motivated, dependable, and technologically sound employees," Reich said. "Hiring veterans is good for business and good for America."

Through these programs, veterans receive skills assessment, individual job counseling, labor market information, classroom and on-the-job training, skills upgrading and retraining, and placement services.

Veterans receiving assistance under these programs may also be eligible for services under other JTPA programs for economically disadvantaged or dislocated workers.

This year, VETS received grant proposals from 39 states. The funds may be spent between July 1, 1996, and June 30, 1997. The amount of each award is based on funds requested by each state in its grant application.
