Developing discussion issues and drafting a list of
potential invitees for a veterans' employment forum to be held this fall will
be on the agenda of the Advisory Committee on Veterans Employment and Training
when it meets June 6-7 in Washington, D.C.
The 18-member committee, which meets quarterly, was
created in 1994 to assess the education, training, employment, re-employment
and rehabilitation needs of the nation's veterans. The committee is responsible
for evaluating the effectiveness of existing Department of Labor programs and,
where deficiencies are detected, to recommend appropriate remedial action.
Staff support for the committee is provided by the department's Veterans'
Employment and Training Service (VETS).
In addition to planning for the employment forum, the
committee will be given details about the VETS 1996 budget, review recent
Congressional hearings and actions, and receive a briefing from Judy Gray,
executive director of the National Skill Standards Board. Committee members
will also preview a video about women veterans produced by the Women's Research
and Education Institute.
Staff from VETS and the Labor Department's Employment and
Training and Employment Standards Administrations will discuss how these
agencies are helping Vietnam-era and disabled veterans gain access to jobs.
Members of the committee come from veterans' service
organizations, the business community, organized labor and other government
agencies. Ronald A. Drach, national employment director of the Disabled
American Veterans, serves as chairman.
The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 9
a.m. at the headquarters of the Disabled American Veterans, 807 Maine Avenue
SW, Washington, D.C. Media interested in attending should contact Gordon Berg
at (202) 219-5573.
