Fifty men and women veterans retrained to be public housing managers were honored in ceremonies today at the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C.

The fourth group to be retrained under a grant from the department's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS) to the National Center for Housing Management, these veterans completed a five-week training program in housing management and maintenance. They also received instruction in security, drug education, fair housing practices, job development, and social service case management.

Preston M. Taylor Jr., assistant secretary of labor for veterans employment and training, presented the certificates of achievement to the program graduates.

"This program has helped prepare veterans to serve as both public housing managers and as role models for inner-city youth," said Taylor. "These men and women possess valuable leadership and management skills from their military service that are extremely useful in managing public housing."

The program, known as Leadership Employment for Armed Forces Personnel (LEAP), has been training and placing veterans as public housing managers since 1992. More than three quarters of all program graduates are currently working in the industry.

"The LEAP program has a track record of providing trained individuals who are dedicated and responsive to the unique needs and problems of public housing management," Taylor said.

All program participants must have served at least four years active duty, have separated or retired within the last four years or be a Vietnam-era or disabled veteran.
