Forty-nine men and women veterans retrained to be public
housing managers were honored in ceremonies February 8 at the Labor Department
in Washington, D.C.
"This program not only prepares former service members to
run public housing projects, but has the added value of preparing them to serve
as role models for inner-city youth. Their work helps reduce substance abuse,
vandalism, and crime," said Preston M. Taylor, Jr., assistant secretary of
labor for veterans employment and training.
Taylor presented the certificates of achievement to the
program graduates, three of whom have already been placed in jobs with public
housing authorities.
The National Center for Housing Management (NCHM) provides
the intensive five-week retraining program, funded by a $433,469 grant from the
department's Veterans Employment and Training Service. Known as Leadership
Employment for Armed Forces Personnel (LEAP), it trains participants in public
housing management, with instruction in security, drug education, fair housing
practices, job development, and social service case management.
"The National Center provides veterans with excellent
one-stop job training and placement services. It has a proven track record of
helping veterans find jobs once they complete their training," Taylor said.
More than three quarters of all program graduates are working as public housing
managers.
Another class of 50 veterans is scheduled to complete
training at the end of May.
