Congressman G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery will be recognized
for his years of dedication to the nation's military veterans during the Labor
Department's 15th annual "Salute to All America's Veterans."
The ceremony, sponsored by the department's Veterans'
Employment and Training Service, will be held in the department's Great Hall,
200 Constitution Ave. N.W., at 11 a.m today.
Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich will acknowledge
Montgomery's constant support for issues affecting the nation's veterans and
will present a message from President Clinton honoring him for his lifelong
commitment.
Montgomery, now in his 14th term on the House Veterans
Affairs Committee, is the ranking minority member and was chairman from
1981-94. He served more than 35 years in military service, including the
European theater in WWII, and is a retired major general of the Mississippi
National Guard.
In 1970 Montgomery served as chairman of the House Select
Committee on U.S. Involvement in Southeast Asia. In 1975-76 he was chairman of
the House Select Committee on Missing Persons in Southeast Asia. As a member of
the Woodcock Commission in 1977 he made 14 trips to Vietnam seeking information
about missing servicemen. He led the 1990 House delegation that succeeded in
bringing home the remains of American servicemen killed in the Korean war.
Montgomery's long-standing interest in those who served is
widely acknowledged and has earned him the affectionate name, "Mr. Veteran."
Keynote speaker for the ceremony will be retired
Lieutenant General Claude Kicklighter, U.S. Army. In September 1991 Kicklighter
was named special assistant to the secretary of the Army. Previously he served
as Commanding General, Pacific, from 1989-91. Foreign assignments included
tours in Vietnam, Iran and Europe. He is a graduate of the United States Army
Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed
Forces.
A statement by Secretary Reich is available on the
department's 24-hour, toll-free audio news service, 1-800-877-9002, through
Saturday, Nov. 11.
