The advisory committee formed by the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA) to determine the best means of protecting
workers against hazards of metalworking fluids will hold a public meeting Dec.
10-12 in Washington, D.C.
The Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee will
meet from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 11, in Room N-5437 (C and D) of the U.S. Department of Labor
Building, 200 Constitution Ave., NW, Washington, DC. On Friday, Dec. 12, the
committee will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room S-3215 (A and B) of the
Department of Labor Building.
The following will be presented at the meeting:
- an overview of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health (NIOSH) criteria document entitled "Criteria for a Recommended Standard:
Occupational Exposures to Metalworking Fluids," which will include a discussion
of the respiratory studies and dermatological studies reported on in the
criteria document;
- an overview of epidemiology, respiratory disease and dermatology
related to metalworking fluids;
- a presentation on machining in small business;
- an overview to using a systems approach for controlling exposures to
metalworking fluids; and
- the scope of fluids to be considered in the advisory committee
inquiries.
- Informal work groups will be established. In addition, OSHA will
discuss its current data collection activities with respect to the use of
metalworking fluids in small business establishments. Agenda items for future
meetings also will be discussed.
Comments, data, views or statements for consideration by
the committee, as well as requests to make oral presentations and requests for
special disability accommodations, should be submitted by Nov. 28 to Dr. Peter
Infante, U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, Directorate of Health Standards
Programs, Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee, Room N-3718, 200
Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, DC, 20210.
Any person wishing to make an oral presentation must
provide a summary of the proposed presentation, an estimate of the time
desired, and a statement of the interest that the person represents.
Presentation time will be allotted to speakers based on the amount of time
available. Public attendees may be allowed to participate in committee
discussions, at the Chair's discretion and subject to time available.
Notice of the meeting is published in the Tuesday, Nov. 18,
1997, Federal Register.
