A special advisory group formed to determine the best means to protect workers against hazards of metalworking fluids will hold its first meeting Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Washington, D.C.

The Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee will meet from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room C-5515(1A and 1B) of the U.S. Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.

Key agenda items will include discussion of committee procedures and review of its charter, as well as discussions of exposure sources and metalworking fluid operations, metalworking fluid design and uses and source documents the committee may wish to use.

Metalworking fluids are widely used in manufacturing industries for their coolant, lubricant and corrosion-resistant properties during operations such as metal grinding, boring, drilling and turning. They are complex mixtures of oils, detergents, biocides, lubricants, anti-corrosive agents and other ingredients.

The 15 members of the committee represent small and large employers, workers, academics, safety and health professionals and government agencies. They will address such issues surrounding occupational exposure to metalworking fluids as methods of analysis and measurement, health effects, significance of risk and technological and economic feasibility.

Written comments, data, views or statements for consideration by the committee should be submitted to Dr. Peter Infante, U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, Directorate of Health Standards Programs, Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee, Room N-3178, 200 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20210.

Interested persons may also address the committee on items on the committee agenda. Persons wishing to make an oral presentation should provide Dr. Infante with a summary of the presentation, an estimate of the time desired and a statement of the interest the person represents. Time will be allotted to speakers based on the amount of time available. The public may also be allowed to participate in committee discussions, at the chair's discretion and subject to time available.

Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Persons who need special accommodations should contact Theresa Berry, Office of Information and Consumer Affairs, OSHA, phone (202) 219-8615, ext. 106, or fax (202) 219-5986.

Comments, requests for oral presentations and requests for special accommodations should be submitted by Aug. 19, 1997.

Notice of the committee meeting is scheduled to be published in the Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, Federal Register.
