The U.S., Canada and Mexico are joining forces to sponsor the first
"North American Safety and Health Week" to be held June 2-6, 1997.
The three countries, which signed the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) to encourage trade and closer economic ties, are working
together under the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC) to
improve working conditions and living standards. The NAALC is commonly referred
to as the labor side agreement to NAFTA. North American Safety and Health Week
will showcase the three nations' efforts and those of labor and employers to
protect employees against workplace hazards.
Acting Secretary of Labor Cynthia Metzler said, "The U.S. is proud to be
a world leader in occupational safety and health, and is constantly working to
extend that leadership further. North American Occupational Safety and Health
Week will help labor, management, the governments and the public understand
what the three countries have done to encourage safe and healthful work
environments in the years since the labor cooperation agreement was signed in
September 1993.
U.S., including a fact sheet on the safety and health programs of the
three countries and a trinational exhibit in the Frances Perkins Building in
Washington.
The commitment of the three nations to occupational safety and health
has been demonstrated through cooperative activities such as seminars, work
groups, conferences, joint research projects, and technical assistance and by
promoting effective enforcement of occupational safety and health
standards.
