The U.S., Canada and Mexico are joining forces to sponsor the first "North American Safety and Health Week" to be held June 2-6, 1997.

The three countries, which signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to encourage trade and closer economic ties, are working together under the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC) to improve working conditions and living standards. The NAALC is commonly referred to as the labor side agreement to NAFTA. North American Safety and Health Week will showcase the three nations' efforts and those of labor and employers to protect employees against workplace hazards.

Acting Secretary of Labor Cynthia Metzler said, "The U.S. is proud to be a world leader in occupational safety and health, and is constantly working to extend that leadership further. North American Occupational Safety and Health Week will help labor, management, the governments and the public understand what the three countries have done to encourage safe and healthful work environments in the years since the labor cooperation agreement was signed in September 1993.

U.S., including a fact sheet on the safety and health programs of the three countries and a trinational exhibit in the Frances Perkins Building in Washington.

The commitment of the three nations to occupational safety and health has been demonstrated through cooperative activities such as seminars, work groups, conferences, joint research projects, and technical assistance and by promoting effective enforcement of occupational safety and health standards.
