The Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) has expanded its investigation of Demolition Services Inc., a Texas
company involved in two recent construction mishaps in which four people died.
"We have subpoenaed the company to provide information about its safety
and health program and to pinpoint the locations of any other work sites where
demolition is in progress," said Cynthia A. Metzler, Acting Secretary of Labor.
OSHA is investigating the demolition site at Houston's Northline Mall
where the collapse of a structure being demolished killed three mall walkers
and the demolition of the Dr Pepper building in Dallas where a worker died
Tuesday. OSHA is also investigating a Demolition Services work site at the Rice
Hotel in Houston to determine if workplace standards have been violated.
"We will continue these investigations and add additional sites if
necessary," said Gregory R. Watchman, acting assistant secretary for OSHA. "We
want to ensure that Demolition Services is providing the appropriate level of
worker protection. Demolition work can be very hazardous and these protections
are necessary and must be enforced."
