Extensive safety and health information for employers and employees in
the construction industry is now available from one source, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced today.
The Construction Resource Manual, found on OSHA's Internet site under
"What's New," includes all OSHA construction standards and applicable general
industry standards as well as agency interpretations integrated into the text.
Further, it contains a listing of the most frequently violated OSHA standards
for the construction industry over the past six years. The manual also provides
addresses and telephone numbers for OSHA regional and area offices as well as
state plan state offices and consultation projects. OSHA's Internet home page
is located at http://www.osha.gov/.
Intended to be a living document, the manual can easily be revised as
new standards and interpretations are issued or updated. In addition, OSHA
intends to develop summaries for each subpart to describe the regulations
simply and briefly.
From the table of contents in The Construction Resource Manual, viewers
can choose subsection headings and move immediately to a PDF (portable document
format) version of the OSHA standards to read or print material. The format
offers the option of printing out just one page or a range of pages so that
those who access the information can obtain the specific parts needed without
printing the whole section. The files also can be searched by word.
OSHA hopes users will find the manual a useful training aid since they
can print out short sections to use in toolbox talks or for other training
sessions. The agency welcomes feedback on additional materials that could be
added that might be helpful to users. Suggestions should go to H. Berrien
Zettler at (202) 219-7207 or bzettler@osha.gov.
The new volume also will be placed on the next OSHA CD-ROM, which
includes all OSHA standards, directives and many additional documents. The next
disc should be distributed to subscribers in late October. In addition, the
agency expects to publish a printed version of the construction standards
combined with applicable general industry standards, also available for
purchase in October.
The OSHA CD-ROM currently costs $79 for a four-disc (roughly one year)
subscription or $28.50 for a single disc. It supports Windows, Macintosh and
DOS-based computers. Titled "OSHA Regulations, Documents, and Technical
Information on CD-ROM," the disc is available from the Government Printing
Office (stock number 729-013-00000-5). GPO will accept VISA, MasterCard or GPO
Deposit Account charges. Written orders must be prepaid. Mail checks, payable
to Superintendent of Documents, along with orders to GPO, Washington, D.C.
20402. For telephone orders, call (202) 512-1800 or fax (202) 512-2250.
