The National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and
Health (NACOSH) will meet May 23 in Washington, D.C., to discuss current
activities of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Included will be an overview of current activities of OSHA
and NIOSH, a legislative update and special reports on OSHA regulatory and
enforcement activities, the National Occupational Research Agenda of NIOSH and
activities of NACOSH work groups.
The committee also will discuss issues of concern to
members and develop plans for future meetings under the direction of the
recently appointed chair, Kathleen M. Rest of the University of Massachusetts
Medical Center at Worcester, who has joined the committee as a public
representative.
Rest is assistant professor of the occupational health
program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and an adjunct
assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts School of Public Health.
She has been active in community and occupational health programs and policy
development for more than 15 years. She served as director of an occupational
disease surveillance project for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health,
has been involved in risk communication and community right-to-know projects,
and served as an international consultant and on national advisory groups
concerned with occupational and environmental health and medicine.
The public meeting will begin at 9 a.m. on May 23 in Room
N-3437 A-D in the Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave., NW, Washington,
DC, and will last until approximately 4 p.m.
Written data, views or comments for consideration by the
committee may be submitted, preferably with 20 copies, to Joanne Goodell,
Directorate of Policy, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Room

Any such submissions received prior to the meeting will be
provided to the committee and included in the record of the meeting.
Anyone wishing to make an oral presentation should notify
Goodell before the meeting. The request should state the amount of time
desired, the capacity in which the person will appear and a brief outline of
the content of the presentation. Persons will be allowed to speak as time
permits, at the discretion of the chair.

NACOSH was established under the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of 1970 to advise the secretaries of labor and health and human
services on occupational safety and health programs and policies. Members of
the 12-person advisory committee are chosen on the basis of their knowledge and
experience in occupational safety and health.
