The Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety
and Health (MACOSH) that Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich recently renewed
for two years will meet May 2-3 in Washington, D.C.
The committee advises the Assistant Secretary of Labor for
Occupational Safety and Health, Joseph A. Dear, on occupational safety and
health programs, policies and standards affecting the U.S. maritime industry.
The 16 committee members have been appointed from government agencies, the
shipbuilding and longshoring industries, labor and professional associations.

consensus on controversial aspects of a longshoring standard, provided

conditions, worked on expanded maritime industry safety and health training and
discussed possible safety and health program initiatives.

chemical and marine engineer for the National Fire Protection Association, will
be introduced at the May 2-3 meeting.
The committee will re-establish its goals, plan for future
meetings, discuss OSHA compliance programs, outreach and training initiatives
and the standards-setting process. The committee also will be briefed on the
current agenda and direction of OSHA.
The MACOSH meeting will be held May 2 from 9 a.m. to
approximately 5 p.m. and May 3 from 9 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. in Room
