OSHA SAFETY AND HEALTH OFFICIAL NAMED AGENCY'S DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY

Michael G. Connors, administrator of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Chicago regional office, has been named the agencyþs new deputy assistant secretary. He will assume his new duties on January 17.

As deputy assistant secretary, Connors will direct and coordinate the activities of OSHA's regional and area offices. He will also be responsible for OSHA's directorates of federal and state operations, compliance programs and construction.

Assistant Secretary of Labor Joseph A. Dear called Connors þan excellent addition to his national office executive staff.

"Mike brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the deputy assistant secretary position," he said. "He was a pivotal player on our area office redesign team and will provide a key role in implementing the agencyþs reinvention efforts in the field. He is also known as a strong enforcer of workplace safety and health issues."

Before beginning work in OSHA's Cincinnati area office, Connors worked as an industrial hygienist for the State of Ohio. He assumed duties as assistant regional administrator for technical support in the Chicago regional office in November 1980. In April 1982 he was named that regionþs deputy regional administrator, a position he held until assuming regional administrator duties in April 1988. He and his wife, Susan Salem, have one daughter. Connors has a bachelor of arts degree in zoology from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and a master of science degree in environmental health from the University of Cincinnati..

Connors replaces James W. Stanley who is leaving OSHA to work in private industry.
