OSHA NAMES NEW NACOSH MEMBERS, SETS SEPT. 21-22 MEETING

Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich has reappointed three members and named two new members to serve 2-year terms on the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH). The group will meet Thursday and Friday, Sept. 21-22 in Washington, D.C.

Reappointed members include James A. Merchant, M.D., University of Iowa, health representative; Henry B. Lick, Ford Motor Company, management representative; and Michael J. Wright, United Steelworkers of America, labor representative. Serving initial 2-year terms are Kenneth J. Zeller, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Labor, public representative; and Kennith D. Brock, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, safety representative. A third new member will be named soon to serve as a public representative.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 22 in seminar room 6 of room C5320 of the Frances Perkins Building at 200 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. NACOSH will receive updates on OSHA and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) activities.

The committee will review current legislation under consideration by Congress and will study the agency's review of its hazard communication standard, development of a proposed safety and health program standard and OSHA's data initiatives. NIOSH representatives will discuss their agency's process for setting a national research agenda and its respirator standard. There will also be brief organizational meetings of two work groups focusing on hazard communication and safety and health programs.

Written data, views or comments may be submitted, preferably with 20 copies, to Joanne Goodell, Directorate of Policy, Room N- 3641, 200 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20210. Submissions received prior to the meeting will be provided to committee members and included in the meeting records. An official record of the meeting will be available for public inspection at OSHA's Technical Data Center, Room N-2625, (202) 219-7500.

Anyone wishing to make an oral presentation should notify Joanne Goodell before the meeting. The request should state the amount of time desired and a brief outline of the presentation content. Persons who request the opportunity to address the committee may be allowed to speak, as time permits, at the discretion of the committee chair.

NACOSH members who are serving in the second year of their 2-year terms include: Ellen Schall, New York University, and Ruy N. Delgado Zayas, University of Puerto Rico, public representatives; Frederick M. Toca, Hoechst Celanese Corporation, management representative; Margaret M. Seminario, AFL-CIO, labor representative; Frederic D. Rine, Options & Choices, safety representative; and Andrea K. Taylor, UAW, health representative.

NACOSH was established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 to advise the secretaries of labor and health and human services on occupational safety and health programs and policies. Members of the 12-person advisory committee are chosen on the basis of their knowledge and experience in occupational safety and health.
