The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has updated the "Consultation Services for the Employer" booklet.

The 18-page booklet (OSHA 3047) explains the steps a consultant takes to employers who want help implementing an effective safety and health program.

Primarily targeted for small businesses in high-hazard industries or with especially hazardous operations, the free consultation service is given chiefly at the worksite, although limited services may be provided away from the worksite. At the worksite, the consultant will identify any specific hazards and give advice and assistance establishing or improving the employer's safety and health program.

Consultation is a cooperative approach to solving safety and health problems in the workplace and is provided only upon request of an employer. The OSHA consultation program provides professional occupational safety and health advice at no cost, and, after receiving this assistance, employers often realize other benefits such as increased productivity, improved product quality and higher employee morale.

A single, free copy of the booklet may be obtained by sending a self-addressed label to the OSHA Publications Office, Room N-3101, 200 Constitution Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20210, telephone (202) 219-4667, (202) 219-9266 (fax).
