U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

NEW OSHA FAX-ON-DEMAND SYSTEM OFFERS IMMEDIATE INFORMATION

Thurs., March 2, 1995

For more information call: (202) 219-8151.

By dialing 1-900-555-3400, callers can have a wide variety of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) information faxed to them immediately through OSHA FAX, the agency's new fax-on-demand system.

OSHA FAX is part of the agency's continuing effort to meet the needs of its customers more promptly and efficiently. The system offers more than 200 brief documents to the public for a nominal telephone charge of $1.50 per minute.

Operated for OSHA by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Technical Information Service, the fax-on-demand database will include agency news releases (updated daily), fact sheets, publications listings, information on the Department of Labor's electronic bulletin board, OSHA office listings, OSHA inspection statistics and other information. Most documents are five pages or fewer, and the typical cost of faxing a two-page item would be $3.00. Callers must use a touch-tone telephone or fax machine to access the database.

When callers dial 1-900-555-3400, they will hear a menu offering five options. Each submenu will list specific materials from which to select. Callers will choose one or two documents, which will then be faxed to the fax number they identify.

Anyone who requests OSHA materials by fax will be directed to the new fax-on-demand system for items available there. Callers may request up to two documents per call.

Most OSHA materials also are available by mail from OSHA Publications, Room N3101, 200 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20210. In addition, the OSHA publications office offers many more lengthy publications. In the future, OSHA plans to provide a detailed listing of free publications and audiovisual materials through OSHA FAX.

Once you dial in, voice prompts will tell you how to obtain information. You may request documents in two ways. First, you may follow voice menus and press the appropriate keys, as prompted. Second, if you already have an OSHA FAX index and know the desired documentþs number, you may press pound during the initial OSHA FAX greeting and follow the instructions of the voice prompts.
