Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao
on September employment numbers
WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the September employment situation report released today:
"110,000 net new jobs were created in September, exceeding expectations. This, combined with the upward revision of 118,000 new jobs to the July and August job estimates, shows that our economy continues to produce new jobs despite the recent challenges. We've now seen 49 straight months of job growth and the unemployment rate remains a full point lower than the average 5.7 percent of the 1990s."
