Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao
On June Employment Numbers
WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the June employment situation released today:
"Today's report, while lower than market expectations, shows continued job growth for America's workers. The unemployment rate remained at 4.6 percent, the lowest point in nearly five years. There have been 34 consecutive months of job growth with 5.4 million new jobs since August 2003. Hourly earnings over the past twelve months increased by 3.9 percent, the highest over the year change since June 2001."
