Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao
On May Employment Numbers
WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the May employment situation released today:
"Today's report contains some good news for America's workers, despite the lower than expected job growth. The unemployment rate declined to the lowest point in nearly five years; there have been 33 consecutive months of job growth, and earnings over the past twelve months have increased by 3.7 percent. It emphasizes the importance of enacting the President's American Competitiveness Initiative, which will spur innovation that creates new jobs and keeps our country competitive in the worldwide economy."
