Decries Spending Plan; Says New Congress "Promised Reform,
but Delivered a Wrecking Ball."
At the very moment that military bases are closing,
corporations are downsizing, and family wages are stagnating, the subcommittee
has given America's anxious class a reason to be more anxious. If Congress
enacts these spending cuts, investments in education and job training will be
drastically reduced -- including a 34 percent cut in investments to help
displaced workers prepare for new work. Workers throughout the nation would be
denied the assistance they need to move smoothly into new jobs. These members
of Congress promised reform, but delivered a wrecking ball.
The subcommittee proposal also chopped investments in
America's most vulnerable young people. Summer jobs have been eliminated, and
job training initiatives have been substantially decreased. Today, millions of
disadvantaged young men and women are searching for a path to the world of work
-- but the subcommittee has closed the road.
And Americans already in the workforce will also suffer.
Each day, some 6,000 workers are injured on the job and lose time from work.
Yet OSHA's enforcement budget has been targeted for a one-third reduction --
which will gravely impair its ability to protect health and safety in the
workplace.
