In October, the Consumer Price Index increased by 0.2%. Excluding the
volatile food and energy sectors, the "core" CPI also rose by 0.2%. The
year-to-date increase in the core CPI is just 1.9%, compared with 2.4% for all
of 1998.
These data, along with the very favorable report on the Employment Cost
Index for the last quarter, indicate that inflation remains stable. High
productivity growth and low unemployment continue to generate solid gains in
earnings for America's working families while inflation remains in check.
