The nation's economy continues to perform at a solid and steady pace. At 4.1 percent, the October unemployment rate is the lowest in 30 years. And more good news: the unemployment rate for women -- also 4.1 percent -- is the lowest since 1953.

Last month we saw impressive gains in a variety of industries. Employment in services rose by 215,000, one-third (75,000) of that in business services. Notable employment increases also occurred in amusement and recreation, health, education, engineering, management and social services. We also saw an increase of 28,000 jobs in the construction industry.

Overall payroll employment rose by 310,000 and has averaged 176,000 jobs over the past two months, indicating stable growth in our economy.

Clearly, now is the time to build on our strong economic foundation. Our challenge is to ensure that every American worker can share in this prosperity.
