Today's positive reports on income and poverty clearly show that the President's economic plan is working. Since 1993, real median income for American families has risen 12.1 percent, and the number of people living in poverty is down 12.2 percent. The promise of a brighter future is within closer reach of more Americans than it was just six years ago.

In the past year, real household income for Hispanics grew faster than for any other group, while the poverty rate for African Americans was at an historical low.

But even with this good news, this is not the time to declare victory. Because poverty is still too high -- particularly among single mothers. More than 1 in 3 live in poverty.

This is the time to raise the minimum wage and raise even more American families and prepare Americans for the challenges of the 21st century by ensuring that work really does pay.
