The Consumer Price Index increased 0.3 percent in the month of August.
However, two-thirds of the increase was accounted for by energy prices.
Excluding the volatile food and energy sectors, the "core" CPI rose by just 0.1
percent in August. During the year of 1999 to date, the core CPI has risen only
1.6 percent.
Overall, prices remain very stable in the U.S. economy. Our combination
of high employment growth, high income growth and price stability indicate an
economy that continues to perform superbly.
