We can start our Labor Day weekend with the good news that unemployment, at 4.2 percent, remains at a 30-year low. The good news continues for all groups the unemployment rates for blacks, Hispanics and high-school dropouts remain near record lows.

The service industry gained 132,000 new jobs in August, above average growth for the past year. Business services accounted for about one-third of that increase. Computer service jobs showed impressive growth demonstrating once again that what you know affects how far you go.

We can enjoy this economic boom because President Clinton made the hard choices of fiscal discipline, targeted investments and opening markets abroad.

As we look ahead, we must continue to make the right choices for workers, employers and families to thrive. Workers must have the education and training they need to be skilled for tomorrow's jobs; they must have the flexibility to succeed at work and at home; and they need the skills and understanding to embrace and value diversity.

Happy Labor Day.
