For the second month in a row, the nations's unemployment rate is only 4.3 percent, the nineteenth consecutive month below 5 percent. And we have set another record: The share of Americans employed today rose to 64.5 percent.

We see strong employment growth continuing in computer services. Engineering and management services registered a large over-the-month employment increase and continued on its strong growth trend. And, despite the fact that January usually brings post-holiday lay-offs in the retail industry, employment there actually rose last month.

As the President has said, this is no time to rest. Our strong economy gives us a golden opportunity to help Americans not only gain jobs, but to build real careers. Today, our challenge is to ensure that workers have the skills they need to get and keep good jobs, and the pension and health care benefits to protect their future.

I'm delighted that today we celebrate not only a strong employment report, but also the sixth anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act--the first piece of Legislation that President signed into law. It is clear that a strong economy and strong families go hand in hand. So today, more than ever, we must ensure that workers can succeed both at home and at work.
