"As we begin the new year, today's employment situation report rings in
continued good news for the American worker. We have added 17.7 million new
jobs to the economy since President Clinton first came into office. Our nation
is enjoying the longest peace time expansion in history.
"Today's report shows an unemployment rate of only 4.3 percent for the
month of December, the 18th consecutive month below 5.0 percent.
"The services industry added 111,000 jobs in December. Employment in
business services rose by 49,000, led by growth in personnel supply. Robust job
growth continued in computer services, where employment rose by 13.3 percent
for the year. Engineering and management services employment also continued its
strong growth, increasing 7.3 percent in 1998. Employment in retail trade rose
by 53,000 in December, the second largest increase in a row. Over the year,
employment in this industry has increased by 462,000.
"As we celebrate the start of 1999 and look forward to the beginning of
a new century, our resolution and our resolve remains clear; we must invest in
lifelong learning and skills development for America's workers. This will mean
a real payoff for our nation, our economy and every single one of us."
