The Bureau of Labor Statistics report, "Number of Jobs, Labor Market
Experience and Earnings Growth: Results From a Longitudinal Survey," provides
important data on the labor market. The typical person in the United States
held almost 9 different jobs between the ages of 18 and 32. Further, nearly 40
percent of all workers in their thirties experienced at least one spell of
unemployment during the period 1991-95. These data show that in our dynamic
economy, workers need to continually be prepared to change jobs or careers. The
key to this preparation is education and training. This is underlined by the
fact that those without a high school degree were more than twice as likely to
experience a spell of unemployment and receive substantially slower real
earnings growth than college graduates.
