Today, the American economy celebrates an historic milestone. For the first time in 25 years, the unemployment has been at or below 5% for 12 consecutive months. That's good news for our workers and our future.

The March Employment Situation Report shows last month's unemployment rate was 4.7 percent. Unemployment for the first quarter of the year was the lowest since 1970.

Job growth for the month was essentially unchanged. Unseasonable weather appears to have played a major role particularly with regard to construction.

However, employment in the finance, insurance and real estate rose by 31,000; engineering and management grew by 16,000; and computer and data processing increased by 17,000.

Spring is the growing season--that's what our economy continues to do. We have the strongest economy in a generation. President Clinton's strategy of investing in lifelong learning and skills development is working. The American economy is healthy, high performing and headed on the right track.
