"No matter what the outcome on the college basketball courts during March madness, one thing is for sure . . . in my book, Duke University is the national slam-dunk champ in the fight against sweatshop labor.

"I applaud Duke's historic initiative. The University realizes that it is not enough to just say they are against sweatshops. They are showing the same attitude toward labor rights as they display in their athletic prowess: Get in the game, know the rules, play hard, be fair . . . and win.

"Duke's code of conduct for its 700 licensees--makers of everything from sweaters to sweatpants--will insure that these garments will not be manufactured under exploitative conditions. Duke fans will now have the confidence of wearing garments with the school's logo that are guaranteed not to be stained by sweatshop labor.

"Duke is clearly the model to follow, and I encourage other colleges and universities to get in the game. Together, we can put garment sweatshops where they belong . . . in the history books."
