"As we begin the new year, today's employment situation report rings in
continued good news for the American worker. We have added 14.3 million new
jobs to the economy since President Clinton first came into office.
"Today's report shows an unemployment rate of only 4.7 percent for the
month of December, the 40th consecutive month below 6.0 percent, and the 23rd
consecutive month at or below 5.5 percent. The proportion of the American
population with jobs was at an all-time high of 64 percent.
"And more good news: manufacturing rebounded this year, with the
addition of 230,000 new manufacturing jobs in 1997, and we continue to see
terrific growth in the high-skill and high-wage occupations like computer
science, health care, engineering and management.
"I made a new year's resolution: we must invest in lifelong learning and
skills development for America's workers. This will mean a clear payoff for our
nation, our economy and every single one of us. Today's report proves this
fact."
