"As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, and as we approach the most holy of holidays, the Department of
Labor re-commits itself to the world effort to end the exploitation of child
labor.
"Every day, throughout the world, millions of children are forced to
work. Many of these children labor in horrendous conditions, often in near
slavery. These children do not enjoy their rights to education, to recreation
and to the other joys most of us wish for our own children.
"Here in the United States, our challenge is to find for our young
people the proper balance between work and their health, well-being and need
for a quality education.
"As the nation's 23rd Secretary of Labor, I am committed to helping
young women and men find meaningful and productive employment -- work that does
not put them at risk; work that complements and does not compete with the
education process.
"On this very special anniversary, I am proud to say that we will be
working harder than ever with our colleagues throughout the world to put an end
to child slavery, to child prostitution, to children working long hours under
hazardous conditions."
