OPA Press Release: Statement by Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman on Child Labor on Carpets [11/05/1997]

For more information call: 202/219-8211

We have been much engaged in the effort to stop exploitative child labor around the world, including through the reports that we have done because of the interest of Senator Harkin and others in the Congress. One of the most tragic and illegal forms of such exploitation is forced or bonded child labor. The continuation of this practice in the carpet-weaving industry remains of concern to the International Labor Organization and to us. We will thoroughly and willingly look at the allegations presented, work with other agencies in the Administration, and assure that the appropriate response under the law is given to the complaint filed today.
