Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman, in response to an announcement
that Levi Strauss & Company will close 11 plants in four states, today
ordered her staff to work with state and local officials in Tennessee,
Arkansas, New Mexico and Texas to make expedited transition assistance
available to the more than 6,000 workers who will be affected by the plant
closings over the next eight months.
"It's always hard when workers lose their jobs, but we do have
strategies that have been successful in easing the transition to new employment
and Levi's eight-month notice gives us the time to put these strategies in
place. I immediately called and got our people on the ground moving, so we
could have a system in place from day one to assist these workers, their
families and their communities," Herman said.
"I am putting all the resources of the Labor Department behind this
effort, in cooperation with state and local officials, to supplement the range
of planning measures that the company, working together with its employees'
unions, has already put in place."
Department of Labor programs, which include early interventions through
state rapid response units, ensure that workers receive job search assistance,
retraining, job counseling and support services -- including income support
during training and relocation allowances -- to assist them in finding new
jobs.
