I lost a friend today, and the American trade union
movement--and the entire nation--lost one of its most articulate advocates for
working families.
John N. Sturdivant was the model of intelligent and
spirited activism, the quintessential public servant and one of the labor
movement's brightest lights. I admired and respected him as a civil rights and
worker rights leader, and treasured him as a friend. Throughout the many years
that I knew him, he always fought the good fight and stayed the course. His
legacy will live in the hearts of every AFGE members--the men and women who
truly make America work.
In his more than 30 years of service to the workers of this
country, he made countless contributions to their lives and their livelihoods.
His most recent efforts in the administration's initiative to reinvent
government is just one shining example of how he consistently demonstrated
leadership, creativity and a deep concern and respect for all government
employees.
My prayers go out to his daughter Michelle, his entire
family and the leadership, staff and members of the American Federation of
Government Employees. I share in the great sorrow that they feel today because
of his death . . . but I hope that they will--as I will--find great comfort and
joy when they remember John's life and his life's work.
