"Today's income and poverty numbers are welcome news. Real median income for families grew 1.2 percent and the overall poverty rate edged down to 13.7 percent. Since 1993, the real median income of families has grown by $2,169 and the poverty rate has declined from 15.1 to 13.7 percent.

"This report underscores the importance of education. Those who have completed college earn 86 percent more than high school graduates, who in turn make 64 percent more than high school drop-outs. In other words, what you learn determines what you earn."
