I met separately with leaders of the Teamsters union and United Parcel
Service this afternoon to personally assess the issues in this dispute. These
private talks were candid, wide-ranging and useful. I discussed in detail with
both Teamsters President Ron Carey and UPS Chief Negotiator Dave Murray what it
would take to get them back to the bargaining table and I made it clear that
everyone involved must show greater flexibility and a willingness to
compromise.
This is week two of the strike and its impact is being felt by workers,
the company and small businesses more with each passing day. The administration
is seriously engaged in bringing both parties back to the table, the only place
a solution will be reached.
Our talks today were serious and each side will be conferring with its
representatives and will get back to me about next steps.
