"I am extremely pleased that negotiators for Wheeling-Pitt and the
United Steelworkers have reached a tentative agreement to end the 10-month old
strike. There were important issues involved in this dispute, and negotiators
for both sides are to be commended for working diligently to resolve them.
"The fact that these two parties could reach a tentative agreement shows
that the desire of workers to have good wages, secure jobs and a guaranteed
pension need not conflict with management's goal of increased efficiency and
higher profits. The Administration supports these goals and congratulates the
parties for staying at the bargaining table to reach this agreement.
"I commend both parties for conducting these negotiations in good faith
and Senator Jay Rockefeller for personally intervening to keep the parties at
the bargaining table until they were able to reach this tentative agreement."
