"As we enter the month of July, the summer weather may be hot, but the nation's employment situation is very comfortable.

The June employment report shows a gain of 217,000 net payroll jobs last month--an increase of 151,000 in the private sector. More than 12.5 million net new jobs have been created in the last 53 months--nearly 93 percent of these jobs are in the private sector.

Today's report shows an unemployment rate of 5.0 percent. This is the 34th consecutive month the rate has been below 6.0 percent, and the 17th consecutive month the rate has been at or below 5.5 percent. Clearly, the economy is moving at a sustainable clip.

Of particular note is the good news of job gains for workers in computer and data processing services, engineering and management occupations, as well as those employed in manufacturing, retail, finance and transportation."
