Summer begins with great news for the American economy . . . and great news for the American worker.

The report shows an unemployment rate of only 4.8 percent for the month of May--the lowest rate of unemployment in 23 years. And there is more good news: This is the 33rd consecutive month that unemployment has been below 6.0 percent, and the 16th consecutive month that the rate has been at or below 5.5 percent.

The May numbers also shows a gain of 138 thousand net payroll jobs that month--an increase of 166 thousand in the private sector.

The Clinton Administration's jobs machine is well-oiled and running smoothly, with 12.3 million net new jobs over the last 52 months. 93.4 percent of these jobs are in the private sector--a record over comparable points of past recoveries.

The message to American workers is simple, direct and very promising: This strong economy provides excellent opportunities for you.
