Cynthia A. Metzler, who served with distinction as Acting Secretary of Labor since January, will leave the U.S. Department of Labor on May 12th. She has accepted a partner position at Pepper, Hamilton & Scheetz, LLP, a law firm based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

President Clinton praised Metzler's service at the Labor Department, saying that she "provided leadership and vision for the 16,000 employees at the Department of Labor. As a result of her unique blend of skills, the Department did not miss a beat in fulfilling its mission for America's working families. Hillary and I wish her the very best and thank her for her outstanding service to this Administration and to the American people."

During her tenure, Metzler continued and accelerated the department's initiatives on behalf of working families. She expanded the department's anti-sweatshop initiative, and launched new programs in other low wage industries. She assured that workers' pensions are better protected and kicked off the Washington, D.C., Summer Jobs Program earlier than any other year. In addition, she doubled the number of summer youth the department pledged to hire.

Metzler led the effort for the department to create more job opportunities for area residents as part of the administration's D.C. Initiative. She also provided key leadership in the administration's effort to train and employ welfare recipients.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman stated that Metzler's "keen management skills, strong commitment to workers, unflagging energy and clear understanding of policy and issues were critical components for a smooth and effective transition of leadership at the Department. She has done an outstanding job--both for the administration and for American workers. We are all grateful to her."

Prior to becoming Acting Secretary, Metzler served as Acting Deputy Secretary for nearly a year. She served previously as Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management since July 1994. In these roles, she led the department's award-winning reinvention efforts and provided strong internal leadership during periods of budget uncertainty.

Before joining the Department of Labor, Metzler worked in the Clinton/Gore transition personnel effort and served as Associate Director of Presidential Personnel. She also was the Associate Administrator for Administration at the General Services Administration. She has 20 years of experience in labor relations, law, consulting and management in both the nonprofit and public sectors.

Metzler's career also includes serving as chief counsel at the Federal Labor Relations Authority; president and chief executive officer of OEF International, an organization to empower and advance women in developing countries; and executive director of Florida Rural Legal Services, a state-wide legal services organization.

She received a Juris doctor from the University of Indiana in 1974 and a bachelors degree from Purdue University in 1970. Additionally, she holds a masters of science degree in human resources development from American University.

Metzler is single and will live in Philadelphia and the District of Columbia.
