It has been a unique honor and singular pleasure to have served as the
Acting Secretary of Labor. I am extraordinarily grateful to President Clinton
for giving me the opportunity to be an advocate for America's working families.
It is also an honor and pleasure for me to welcome Alexis M. Herman back
to the U.S. Department of Labor. She will be--without a doubt--one of the
finest Labor Secretaries in the history of the Department.
I am confident that Secretary Herman will play a critical role in
bettering the lives of this nation's workforce. She brings to this job a strong
and clear understanding of both work and workers, as well as a lifetime of
experience in worker training, human resources, activism and simple compassion.
Having served as the Director of the department's Women's Bureau and as the
President's Director of Public Liaison at the White House, Alexis Herman has
the intuitive skills and strong commitment to make a real and positive
difference in the lives' of America's working families.
She will also have the help and support of the Labor Department's
16,000 employees--the finest and most dedicated people I have ever known and
worked with.
I wish Alexis good luck and godspeed as the nation's twenty-third U.S.
Secretary of Labor.
