The Labor Department today announced a new small business
advisor charged with helping small, minority and women-owned businesses to
become aware of and successfully compete in the department's procurement
opportunities.
Mauricio P. Vera, small and disadvantaged business
utilization specialist in the Office of Small Business Programs, will continue
the office's initiatives of working directly with Hispanic, Asian-American and
Native-American organizations. He also will administer Executive Order 12900,
Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and the Department's Memorandum
of Understanding with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities,
and such initiatives with other groups.
Vera comes to the department from the Smithsonian
Institution, where he managed the Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization
Program. There he developed, coordinated and implemented a program that
significantly increased the representation of small, minority and women-owned
businesses receiving consideration and procurement awards from the
Smithsonian's 45 museums, research institutes and offices.
Previously Vera served as a senior financial analyst with
the Small Business Administration's Office of Minority Small Business and
Capital Ownership Development, where he developed comprehensive experience
administering the agency's 8(a) small business development program.
A native of Chile, Vera earned a Master of Business
Administration from George Mason University and a Bachelor of Science in
Agricultural Economics from the University of Maryland. He is a member of the
Federal agency-wide Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization Directors
Interagency Council and currently chairs the Council's SBA Working Group.
