Cynthia A. Metzler, Acting Secretary of Labor, issued the following statement upon the death of former teacher and union activist, Albert Shanker.

"Albert Shanker was a teacher's teacher and a man who brought integrity, passion and respect to the union movement. As a classroom math teacher, a leader in the teaching ranks and as the head of the American Federation of Teachers, Shanker sought to improve the educational opportunities of America's children."

"All of us who believe in the power and purpose for the labor movement in this country mourn his death while we applaud all he has accomplished."
